Engagement Rings For Dummies

To say that an engagement ring is just another piece of jewelry is like saying that Page was just another member of Zeppelin. It’s like saying that Montana was just another NFL quarterback. It’s like saying that the wheel was just another invention. These kinds of things just simply are not true, and to think otherwise would be downright ludicrous,so why would you think anything less of such a symbolic and important fine jewelry piece like a diamond engagement ring?

This is the piece of jewelry your future wife will look at for the rest of her life! Don’t you want her to love and appreciate it for as long as you both shall live? Of course you do, so don’t be unprepared when it comes to knowing about diamonds and precious metals. There are scores of online sites dedicated to educating the general public - we mean all you hopeless bachelors - on these very topics, from the 4 C’s of diamonds, to getting the best prices on platinum, and even how to utilize custom design services.

You can find anything you need to know all with the touch of a mouse or a swipe of the iPad. Heck, your trusted jeweler can even give you the rundown. So don’t approach this task lightly. You want to hear her say yes, not go running for the door! Do a little research, ask around for some sage advice in the engagement ring buying arena, and expect to see your efforts pay off when you drop to one knee and open that velvet-trimmed box.

The Cubic Zirconium Skeptic

There is a huge stigma over the cubic zirconium versus diamond debate in jewelry shops around the world. Most people are entirely against cubic zirconium, claiming that they are an inferior gem to the natural beauty of a real diamond. Quite frankly, cubic zirconium has gotten a bad rap. There is nothing wrong with choosing the synthesized version. Not only is it more affordable, allowing you to save money for things that might be a priority like a home or honeymoon, but it is optically flawless and can be made to be absolutely clear.

Although diamonds are quite a bit harder, cubic zirconium is still an exceptionally hard stone.  When you are presenting your loved one with a ring or other piece of jewelry, most sensible people realize that the stone type does not have much bearing on the situation. It is the moment you share in the gift giving and receiving. The memories you made that day are commemorated by a beautiful piece of jewelry. This lab made quality flawless jewelry has all the perks! It looks and feels like a stone, it sparkles and shines like a stone, it is more cost effective and can be made to your custom specifications.

Gold vs. Silver: USA Beats USSR in Hockey circa 1976

There are all sorts of rivalries that will never be settled. Trust me, I’m a Boston Red Sox AND a Dallas Cowboys fan. I know that there are certain questions never to be answered. Right up with there is the argument of gold versus silver. Each precious metal has good points. It all comes down to preference.

There really is no competition. If you were to ask a professional jeweler, odds are they would tell you that gold is the winner, but only because the value of gold is so much higher than silver these days.  The other advantage that gold has is the fact that it is basically unique. There are other precious metals that affordable fine jewelry is made out of that is similar to silver in appearance but not in value.

The advantage of silver, however, is just that...silver will maintain a value that has been proven while other new “substitute” materials may not be able to. Plus, silver has more of a range in what kind of precious gem stones it can work with. Gold is limited to certain stones while silver is a much more welcoming metal. In the end, who wins the gold versus silver debate is really left up to who buys the jewelry.

How to Impress Your Better Half

Rodney Dangerfield was right. I get no respect, no respect. I assume this is a problem you have too; too often we get used to doing stuff for our loved ones, to the point where we forget that they can do stuff for themselves. So how to impress your better half? Well, this is a jewelry blog, so let’s talk shiny rocks.

·     Memorize the Moh’s Scale of Mineral Hardness Brains are always sexy, at least in my book. You can probably get away with just the values for the more impressive rocks. Just remember, it’s a logarithmic scale, so a mineral with a hardness of 10 (diamonds) is ten times harder than 9 (corundum, which sapphires and rubies are both variants of). Also, you get to whip out the word logarithm.

·      Observe Your Better Half in the Wild Learn again what he or she likes in jewelry. It’s always nice to be reminded that your beloved is still infatuated enough with you to remember the little details.

There! Two ways to show off a bit in front of that most treasured person, the apple in your eye. Next time you ask yourself how to impress your better half, remember: look smart and be sensitive. You convinced them to love you, the important part is keeping up the charade, right? Right.
